What Shocks and Struts Do

Your Subaru's shocks and struts are designed to absorb road impacts and reduce bouncing; this way, your ride remains placid on bumpy roads. They also play a large role when it comes to braking, handling, and tire performance; thus, when your shocks and struts are overly worn, your safety is jeopardized. The rate of deterioration will depend on road conditions; however, there are a few tell-tales to look for when it comes to shock and strut issues. Note before starting: we at Mastro Subaru recommend getting your shocks and struts inspected every 15,000 miles regardless of the road conditions in your local area.

What Brandon Area Drivers Need To Look Out For

  • Nose Dives and Rear End Squats: If the front end of your car dives down when you brake, your shocks and struts need to be replaced. Same holds true if the rear end dips when accelerating. Subaru vehicles are built to perform optimally; if something feels rough, it's not simply the car's natural way. We promise you.
  • Excessive Bouncing: If you drive over a bump and your vehicle continues to bounce, you've likely got a coil spring issue on your hands. Coil springs--part of your suspension system--are in place to absorb shock and prevent continuous bouncing after driving over a pothole or bump.
  • Tire "Cupping:" Do your tires have interspersed smooth patches and tread patches? If so, you're likely experiencing tire wear from excessive bouncing. Certain bounces will remove rubber on your tires and lead to uneven tread-wear patterns.
  • Leaking Fluid: Since all shocks and struts contain a piston and hydraulic fluid, it's normal to see a little wetness on the shock or strut; however, it should not be soaked. In short: you should see more dry spots than wet spots.
